Pennsylvania Medical Marijuana Certification Process
The certification process is a bit different in Pennsylvania than in many other states. Register with the Pennsylvania Department of Health
The first step in obtaining your medical marijuana card is to register with the Pennsylvania Department of Health. In order to register, patients will need to have a valid state-issued identification card (such as a driver’s license) and an email address. There is no age limit for patients, but those under the age of 18 are required to have a legal guardian or parent serve as their caregiver in order for them to obtain medical marijuana. If you have any trouble using the state website or registering, we recommend contacting the state directly for support at 888-733-5595.
Obtain Your Medical Marijuana Patient ID Number
After successfully registering on the state website, you will receive a 6-digit medical marijuana patient ID number. After obtaining your number, you will be ready to see a medical marijuana doctor in Pennsylvania. For patients having trouble obtaining their ID number via the online application, we recommend contacting our support center at 877-242-0362 for assistance.
Finding a Registered Medical Marijuana Doctor In Pennsylvania
The last step in getting your Pennsylvania medical marijuana card is to be evaluated and certified by a state-licensed medical cannabis doctor.
It can sometimes be difficult for patients to find a doctor who will certify them. We currently offer online telemedicine visits that allow you to be seen by a medical cannabis doctor from the comfort and security of home, making the search for a physician easy for you.
If you believe that you have one of the qualifying medical conditions and have at least one type of proof, then you will most likely qualify. Our doctor can evaluate you, review any medical documentation you are able to provide, and certify you for your PA medical card.

Will my insurance company cover the certification process, consultation, or medical marijuana application in Pennsylvania?
No. Insurance companies do not cover any costs associated with medical marijuana due to conflicts with federal law.
Where can I get medical marijuana once I am certified for medical marijuana in Pennsylvania?
Legal patients can obtain medical marijuana products from licensed dispensaries located throughout the state. Patients will also be able to use their card in other medical states that offer reciprocity. Reciprocity laws vary from state to state, so the best way to find out if a dispensary accepts medical cards from other states is by giving them a call.
How much medical marijuana can a qualifying patient possess at one time?
Qualified patients can purchase:
• Up to 14 non-flower medical marijuana products per day
• Up to 21 grams of flower per day
• Up to 4 ounces of flower in a 30-day period
What forms of marijuana will be available to purchase in Pennsylvania?
Dispensaries in Pennsylvania currently carry a wide range of medical marijuana products including raw flower, concentrates, vapable products such as cartridges, oral products such as capsules and tinctures, topicals such as patches and creams, and more. Our doctor along with dispensary staff can help determine which forms may be best for you.
Can I grow my own medical marijuana or can my caregiver grow it?
No. The Pennsylvania Department of Health does not allow patients or caregivers to cultivate medical marijuana. Only a state-licensed cultivation facility can grow medical marijuana.
Will anyone be able to find out that I am a Pennsylvania medical marijuana patient?
No, as a medical patient you are protected by HIPAA. Green Health Docs makes the privacy and security of our patients’ confidential information a top priority. No one will be able to find out your status as a medical marijuana patient unless you openly tell them or if you are administered a drug test for marijuana.
Can my employer still administer a drug screening for marijuana if I am a legal medical patient in Pennsylvania?
Yes. With Pennsylvania being an at-will state and there not currently being any legislation in place that protects medical marijuana patients in the workplace, medical cardholders can still be administered drug screenings and receive disciplinary action regarding the results of drug screenings. For this reason, we recommend making sure you are fully aware of your employer’s policy regarding drug screenings and medical marijuana before moving forward with the process.
Can I Still Get a Pennsylvania Medical Card If I’m on Probation or Parole?
Pennsylvania does not have any restrictions regarding patients on probation or parole, however, you must get permission from your probation or parole officer first before pursuing a medical marijuana card.
What happens if I am stopped by law enforcement?
As a legal medical marijuana patient, you are protected. Patients do not have to disclose that they possess medical marijuana and do not have to consent to a search. However, if a search is conducted and medical marijuana is found, the patient should immediately present their patient ID card or direct law enforcement to the state database to show that they are a legal patient.
Do Pennsylvania dispensaries recognize other state medical marijuana ID cards?
Yes. Pennsylvania offers reciprocity for medical marijuana patients from a number of other states including Maryland. The best way to find out if a dispensary will accept your medical card is by giving them a call first.
Can I use my Pennsylvania medical marijuana card in another state?
Yes, there are multiple states currently accepting Pennsylvania medical cards. The laws for using out-of-state medical cards vary from state to state, so the best way to find out is by contacting a dispensary in the state you’re interested in visiting to find out for sure.
Can I renew with Green Health Docs if I was seen by a different doctor last year?
Yes! You do not have to be seen by the same doctor each year. If you were certified by another medical marijuana doctor last year and would like to switch to Green Health Docs, we will be happy to take care of you!
