Benefits of Having a Medical Cannabis Card in Recreation States

Even if you live in a recreational-use state, there are several advantages to becoming a medical marijuana patient.

Fewer Restrictions

Recreational cannabis is typically limited to patients over 21 years of age and comes with strict possession limits. As a medical marijuana patient, you face fewer restrictions and have more freedom to access your medication in greater quantities.

Greater Selection

A medical marijuana card affords you the privilege of shopping in both medicinal and adult-use dispensaries. Greater access means more products to choose from and more freedom to compare prices and find the best deals.

More Protection

Some recreational-use states still allow employers, landlords, and family courts to discriminate against cannabis users. A medical marijuana certification provides you with legal documentation demonstrating that your use is medically warranted. This can protect you against discriminatory or punitive actions in many states.

Better Prices

As a medical marijuana patient, you won’t be subject to the same sales or excise taxes required of recreational buyers. You may be able to save 10% or more on every purchase.

Maryland Medical Card Certification Process

The certification process in MD is a little different than many other medical states. While most states require you to be seen by a doctor first to obtain a certification and then register with the state, Maryland encourages patients to apply with their medical cannabis registry first before seeing a doctor. However, if you’re having trouble getting registered, you’re welcome to wait until after you see our doctor so that we can help get your application submitted to the state.

  • 1
Register with the MD and obtain your patient ID number.
  • 2
Schedule an appointment with a licensed MD medical marijuana doctor.
  • 3
Speak with the doctor to determine if you qualify.
  • 4
Get your electronic medical marijuana ID card and start purchasing at dispensaries the same day!

Register with the Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission (MMCC) Through OneStop

The first step in obtaining a medical marijuana card is to register with the Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission (MMCC) through OneStop. In order to register, patients will need to have: – a valid Maryland identification card or a government-issued identification card (such as a driver’s license or passport) along with two proofs of Maryland Residency – a valid email address. Additionally, you will be required to upload a passport-size photo (from the shoulders up with a white background; no hats or glasses).  If you have any trouble using the website or registering, our staff at any of our Maryland offices will be happy to assist you. You can also contact the state directly at 410-487-8100 for assistance.

Obtain Your Medical Cannabis Patient ID Number

After successfully registering with the MMCC, you will receive a 16-digit medical cannabis patient ID number in about 30-45 business days.  After obtaining your ID number, you will be ready to see a medical marijuana doctor in Maryland.

Get Your Medical Cannabis Patient ID Number First

After completing the MMCC registration process and obtaining a MMCC patient ID number, you are now ready to see a registered Maryland medical marijuana doctor. Obtaining your ID number prior to your doctor visit means that you can go straight to the dispensary on the same day right after being evaluated. If you see the doctor first and then register on the MMCC website, you must wait to get your patient ID number from the MMCC before visiting a dispensary. It can take up to 45 business days to receive your patient ID number from the state.

Find a Registered Medical Marijuana Doctor In Maryland

The last step in getting your Maryland medical marijuana card is to be evaluated and certified by a state-licensed medical cannabis doctor.

It can sometimes be difficult for patients to find a doctor who will certify them. We currently offer in-person evaluations as well as online telemedicine visits that allow you to be seen by a medical cannabis doctor from the comfort and security of home, making the search for a physician easy for you.

If you believe that you have one of the qualifying medical conditions and have at least one type of proof, then you will most likely qualify. Our doctor can evaluate you, review any medical documentation you are able to provide, and issue your certification so that you can apply for your card.

Can any doctor in the state of Maryland certify me for a medical marijuana card?

No. Doctors must hold a valid license to practice medicine in the state and register with the Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission in order to certify patients for a medical marijuana card. All of our doctors here at Green Health Docs are registered with the state and demonstrate the knowledge and compassion necessary to give you the highest possible quality of care.

Can veterans become legal medical marijuana patients in Maryland?

Yes. Veterans can obtain medical marijuana in the same way as any other patient at Green Health Docs. We are proud to help our veterans combat their medical conditions with medical marijuana and offer a Veteran’s discount for initial certification appointments.

Can children become legal medical marijuana patients in Maryland?

Yes. Children (under the age of 18) can become medical marijuana patients in Maryland. However, the child must have a parent or guardian register as his/her caregiver.

What is a caregiver?

Caregivers provide a service for medical marijuana patients (including those under 18) who cannot or do not wish to go to a dispensary to purchase their medical marijuana. A caregiver is able to purchase medical marijuana on behalf of the patient as well as help administer the medication. Caregivers are only appointed by patients and must be 21 years or older and register with the MMCC as a caregiver.

How do I register as a patient or caregiver in Maryland?

The Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission’s online medical marijuana registry is open and can be visited. The application fee is $50 for patients and $25 for caregivers. If you’re having trouble getting registered, you can contact us at 240-356-1000 or wait for your visit with our doctor to get help with the registration process.

Will waiting to register with the state until after I get evaluated by the doctor cause any issues?

No. While the state encourages patients to register online first before getting certified by a doctor, we understand that many patients do not have internet access or may require assistance with this process. At Green Health Docs we are happy to provide this complimentary service. Just contact us with your patient ID number once you receive it and we will have our doctor activate your card within 24 hours.

How long does it take to get registered with the state?

The registration process itself only takes about 15 minutes to complete and submit to the state. Once they receive your application, it typically takes 30-45 days for them to either approve or deny your submission. If approved, you will receive your patient ID number which will then need to be activated by a doctor. Once activated you can print your temporary ID card and start accessing dispensaries.

Will my insurance company cover the certification process, consultation, or medical marijuana application in Maryland?

No. Insurance companies do not cover any costs associated with medical marijuana due to conflicts with federal law.

Where can I get medical marijuana once I am certified for medical marijuana in Maryland?

Legal patients can obtain medical marijuana products from licensed dispensaries located throughout the state. Patients will also be able to use their card in other medical states that offer reciprocity, such as Pennsylvania and Washington D.C.

How much medical marijuana can a qualifying patient possess at one time?

A medical marijuana patient may possess up to 120 grams (approximately four ounces) of medical marijuana flower or up to 36 grams of processed medical marjuana products (such as oils, extracts, etc.) in a rolling 30-day period. Each purchase a patient makes will be replenished onto their allotment 30 days later.

What forms of marijuana will be available to purchase in Maryland?

Dispensaries in Maryland currently carry a wide range of medical marijuana products including raw flower, concentrates, vapable products such as cartridges, oral products such as capsules and tinctures, topicals such as patches and creams, and more. Our doctor along with dispensary staff can help determine which forms may be best for you.

Are edibles available in Maryland?

Technically no, so you won’t be able to find your typical marijuana edible such as brownies or cookies. However, there are many edible forms of marijuana that are currently available at Maryland dispensaries such as gummies, mints, drinks, and more.

Can I grow my own medical marijuana or can my caregiver grow it?

No. The Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission does not allow patients or caregivers to cultivate medical marijuana. Only a state-licensed cultivation facility can grow medical marijuana.

Will anyone be able to find out that I am a Maryland medical marijuana patient?

No, as a medical patient you are protected by HIPAA. Green Health Docs makes the privacy and security of our patients’ confidential information a top priority. No one will be able to find out your status as a medical marijuana patient unless you openly tell them or if you are administered a drug test for marijuana.

Can my employer still administer a drug screening for marijuana if I am a legal medical patient in Maryland?

Yes. With Maryland being an at-will state and there not currently being any legislation in place that protects medical marijuana patients in the workplace, medical cardholders can still be administered drug screenings and receive disciplinary action regarding the results of drug screenings. For this reason, we recommend making sure you are fully aware of your employer’s policy regarding drug screenings and medical marijuana before moving forward with the process.

Can I Still Get a Maryland Medical Card If I’m on Probation or Parole?

Maryland does not have any restrictions regarding patients on probation or parole, however, you must get permission from your probation or parole officer first before pursuing a medical marijuana card.

What happens if I am stopped by law enforcement?

As a legal medical marijuana patient, you are protected. Patients do not have to disclose that they possess medical marijuana and do not have to consent to a search. However, if a search is conducted and medical marijuana is found, the patient should immediately present their patient ID card or direct law enforcement to the Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission database to show that they are a legal patient.

Do Maryland dispensaries recognize other state medical marijuana ID cards?

No. You must be certified in Maryland by a registered medical marijuana doctor to legally access and purchase from dispensaries in the state.

Can I use my Maryland medical marijuana card in another state?

Yes, there are multiple states currently accepting Maryland medical cards including Pennsylvania and Washington D.C. The laws for using out-of-state medical cards vary from state to state, so the best way to find out is by contacting a dispensary in the state you’re interested in visiting.

What is the renewal process?

You will need to be seen by a doctor once per year in order to remain certified. The expiration date for your certification can be found on your MMCC written certification. The fee to be re-certified is $150. You will also need to re-apply with the state every 3 years in order to remain registered as a patient. The expiration date for your state registration is found on your MMCC patient ID card. The fee to register with the state again is $50.

Can I renew with Green Health Docs if I was seen by a different doctor last year?

Yes! You do not have to be seen by the same doctor each year. If you were certified by another medical marijuana doctor last year and would like to switch to Green Health Docs, we will be happy to take care of you!
