Benefits of Having a Medical Cannabis Card in New Mexico

Even if you live in a recreational-use state, there are several advantages to becoming a medical marijuana patient.

Fewer Restrictions

Recreational cannabis is typically limited to patients over 21 years of age and comes with strict possession limits. As a medical marijuana patient, you face fewer restrictions and have more freedom to access your medication in greater quantities.

Greater Selection

A medical marijuana card affords you the privilege of shopping in both medicinal and adult-use dispensaries. Greater access means more products to choose from and more freedom to compare prices and find the best deals.

More Protection

Some recreational-use states still allow employers, landlords, and family courts to discriminate against cannabis users. A medical marijuana certification provides you with legal documentation demonstrating that your use is medically warranted. This can protect you against discriminatory or punitive actions in many states.

Better Prices

As a medical marijuana patient, you won’t be subject to the same sales or excise taxes required of recreational buyers. You may be able to save 10% or more on every purchase.

Find a Registered Medical Marijuana Doctor In New Mexico

The first step in getting your New Mexico medical marijuana card is to be evaluated and certified by a state-licensed medical cannabis doctor.

It can sometimes be difficult for patients to find a doctor who will certify them. We currently offer online telemedicine visits that allow you to be seen by a medical cannabis doctor from the comfort and security of home, making the search for a physician easy for you.

Register with the New Mexico Department of Health

The next step after being certified by a doctor is to apply with the New Mexico Department of Health as a medical cannabis patient. In order to apply, patients will need to have:

  • Completed & signed medical cannabis program patient application
  • One-page clinic note related to the qualifying condition
  • Valid New Mexico state-issued photo ID

Once approved by our doctor, we’ll issue the signed medical cannabis program patient application along with clinic notes regarding your qualifying condition.  You can then complete the rest of the form and submit your application to the New Mexico Department of Health by postal mail or by dropping it off in person. It can take up to 30 days for the state to approve or deny an application and an additional 5 business days to receive the medical ID card once approved.

Can my employer still administer a drug screening for marijuana if I am a legal medical patient in New Mexico?

Yes. With New Mexico being an at-will state and there not currently being any legislation in place that protects medical marijuana patients in the workplace, medical cardholders can still be administered drug screenings and receive disciplinary action regarding the results of drug screenings. For this reason, we recommend making sure you are fully aware of your employer’s policy regarding drug screenings and medical marijuana before moving forward with the process.

Yes! You do not have to be seen by the same doctor each year. If you were certified by another medical marijuana doctor last year and would like to switch to Green Health Docs, we will be happy to take care of you!
