Benefits of Having a Medical Cannabis Card in Colorado
Even if you live in a recreational-use state, there are several advantages to becoming a medical marijuana patient.
Fewer Restrictions
Recreational cannabis is typically limited to patients over 21 years of age and comes with strict possession limits. As a medical marijuana patient, you face fewer restrictions and have more freedom to access your medication in greater quantities.
Greater Selection
A medical marijuana card affords you the privilege of shopping in both medicinal and adult-use dispensaries. Greater access means more products to choose from and more freedom to compare prices and find the best deals.
More Protection
Some recreational-use states still allow employers, landlords, and family courts to discriminate against cannabis users. A medical marijuana certification provides you with legal documentation demonstrating that your use is medically warranted. This can protect you against discriminatory or punitive actions in many states.
Better Prices
As a medical marijuana patient, you won’t be subject to the same sales or excise taxes required of recreational buyers. You may be able to save 10% or more on every purchase.

Will my insurance company cover the certification process, consultation, or medical marijuana application in Colorado?
No. Insurance companies do not cover any costs associated with medical marijuana due to conflicts with federal law.
Where can I get medical marijuana once I am certified for medical marijuana in Colorado?
Legal patients can obtain medical marijuana products from licensed dispensaries located throughout the state. Patients will also be able to use their card in other medical states that offer reciprocity.
How much medical marijuana can a qualifying patient possess at one time?
As a medical cardholder, you may purchase and possess up to two (2) ounces of medical marijuana. Recreational customers will be limited to just 1 ounce.
What forms of marijuana will be available to purchase in Colorado?
Virtually all types of medical marijuana will be available at dispensaries in Colorado including raw flower, concentrates, edibles, tinctures, topicals, transdermal patches, and more. Seeds, clones, and other growing products will also be available.
Can I grow my own medical marijuana or can my caregiver grow it?
Yes. Adults 21 or older may cultivate up to six (6) plants in their home.
What is a caregiver?
A caregiver is a Colorado resident aged 18 or over who is designated by a medical marijuana patient to be able to purchase and possess medical cannabis on behalf of the patient. They are also designated to help dispense and administer medical cannabis for the patient.
Will anyone be able to find out that I am a Colorado medical marijuana patient?
No, as a medical patient you are protected by HIPAA. Green Health Docs makes the privacy and security of our patients’ confidential information a top priority. No one will be able to find out your status as a medical marijuana patient unless you openly tell them or if you are administered a drug test for marijuana.
Can my employer still administer a drug screening for marijuana if I am a legal medical patient in Colorado?
Yes. With Colorado being an at-will state and there not currently being any legislation in place that protects medical marijuana patients in the workplace, medical cardholders can still be administered drug screenings and receive disciplinary action regarding the results of drug screenings. For this reason, we recommend making sure you are fully aware of your employer’s policy regarding drug screenings and medical marijuana before moving forward with the process.
Can I use my Colorado medical marijuana card in another state?
Yes, there are currently multiple states that accept Colorado medical marijuana cards. Because reciprocity laws differ from state to state and with each dispensary, we recommend contacting a dispensary in the state you’re interested in visiting to find out if they will accept your card.
What is the renewal process?
You are required to be re-certified by a doctor once every year; the cost to renew is $150. You will also need to renew your card with the state every year for $25.
Can I renew with Green Health Docs if I was seen by a different doctor last year?
Yes! You do not have to be seen by the same doctor each year. If you were certified by another medical marijuana doctor last year and would like to switch to Green Health Docs, we will be happy to take care of you!
