Benefits of Having a Medical Cannabis Card in Recreation States

Even if you live in a recreational-use state, there are several advantages to becoming a medical marijuana patient.

Fewer Restrictions

Recreational cannabis is typically limited to patients over 21 years of age and comes with strict possession limits. As a medical marijuana patient, you face fewer restrictions and have more freedom to access your medication in greater quantities.

Greater Selection

A medical marijuana card affords you the privilege of shopping in both medicinal and adult-use dispensaries. Greater access means more products to choose from and more freedom to compare prices and find the best deals.

More Protection

Some recreational-use states still allow employers, landlords, and family courts to discriminate against cannabis users. A medical marijuana certification provides you with legal documentation demonstrating that your use is medically warranted. This can protect you against discriminatory or punitive actions in many states.

Better Prices

As a medical marijuana patient, you won’t be subject to the same sales or excise taxes required of recreational buyers. You may be able to save 10% or more on every purchase.

Find a Registered Medical Marijuana Doctor In Ohio

The first step in getting your Ohio medical marijuana card is to be evaluated and certified by a state-licensed medical cannabis doctor.

It can sometimes be difficult for patients to find a doctor who will certify them. We currently offer online telemedicine visits that allow you to be seen by a medical cannabis doctor from the comfort and security of home, making the search for a physician easy for you.

If you believe that you have one of the qualifying medical conditions and have at least one type of proof, then you will most likely qualify. Our doctor can evaluate you, review any medical documentation you are able to provide, and issue your cannabis recommendation so that you can get your card.

Access Your Card Online

Once you have the doctor’s recommendation on file, you will receive an email from the state that will allow you to complete your registration and access the electronic copy of your medical marijuana ID card. You can then immediately begin accessing dispensaries and purchasing medical marijuana products. If you’re having trouble completing your registration or accessing your card, we recommend calling the state directly for support at 1-833-464-6627.

Can any doctor in the state of Ohio certify me for a medical marijuana card?

No. Physicians must hold a valid license to practice medicine in Ohio and register with the state in order to certify patients for a medical marijuana card. All of our doctors here at Green Health Docs are registered with the state and demonstrate the knowledge and compassion necessary to give you the highest possible quality of care.

Can veterans become legal medical marijuana patients in Ohio?

Yes. Veterans can obtain medical marijuana in the same way as any other patient at Green Health Docs. We are proud to help our veterans combat their medical conditions with medical marijuana!

Can children become legal medical marijuana patients in Ohio?

Yes. Children (under the age of 18) can become medical marijuana patients in Ohio. However, the child must have a parent or guardian register as his/her caregiver.

What is a caregiver?

A caregiver is an Ohio resident at least 21 years of age who is designated to be able to purchase medical marijuana products from dispensaries on behalf of a qualified patient. Patients under the age of 18 are required to have a caregiver. Caregivers can purchase on behalf of up to two patients.

How do I apply as a patient or caregiver in Ohio?

Only a licensed medical marijuana doctor can enter you into the state registry as a patient or caregiver. Once you’ve been entered, you’ll receive an email with a link that will allow you to log into your account, complete your application, and pay the fee. The annual registration cost is $50 for patients and $25 for caregivers.

How long does it take to get registered with the state?

Once your registration is complete and the fee has been paid, you’ll be able to access the electronic copy of your medical marijuana ID card immediately from your online account. You can then use the card to purchase medical marijuana products from any state-licensed dispensary.

Will my insurance company cover the certification process, consultation, or medical marijuana application in Ohio?

No. Insurance companies do not cover any costs associated with medical marijuana due to conflicts with federal law.

Where can I get medical marijuana once I am certified for medical marijuana in Ohio?

Legal patients can obtain medical marijuana products from licensed dispensaries located throughout the state. Patients will also be able to use their card in other medical states that offer reciprocity. To find out if another state accepts Ohio medical cards, we recommend contacting a dispensary within that state.

Do I need to carry a medical marijuana patient ID card?

No. The state decided not to issue physical ID cards, but patients will be required to have the digital copy of their medical ID card in order to be able to purchase from dispensaries.

How much medical marijuana can a qualifying patient possess at one time?

Qualified patients may purchase and possess up to a 90-day supply of medical marijuana products, as determined by their certifying doctor and dispensary.

What forms of marijuana will be available to purchase in Ohio?

Dispensaries in Ohio currently carry a wide range of medical marijuana products including concentrates, vapable products such as cartridges, oral products such as capsules and tinctures, topicals such as patches and creams, and more. The only form of medical marijuana that will NOT be available for purchase is raw flower. Our doctor along with dispensary staff can help determine which forms may be best for you.

Can I grow my own medical marijuana or can my caregiver grow it?

No. The state does not allow patients or registered agents to cultivate medical marijuana. Only a state-licensed cultivation facility can grow medical marijuana.

Will anyone be able to find out that I am an Ohio medical marijuana patient?

No, as a medical patient you are protected by HIPAA. Green Health Docs makes the privacy and security of our patients’ confidential information a top priority. No one will be able to find out your status as a medical marijuana patient unless you openly tell them or if you are administered a drug test for marijuana.

Can my employer still administer a drug screening for marijuana if I am a legal medical patient in Ohio?

Yes. With Ohio being an at-will state and there not currently being any legislation in place that protects medical marijuana patients in the workplace, medical cardholders can still be administered drug screenings and receive disciplinary action regarding the results of drug screenings. For this reason, we recommend making sure you are fully aware of your employer’s policy regarding drug screenings and medical marijuana before moving forward with the process.

Can I still get an Ohio medical marijuana card if I’m on probation or parole?

Ohio does not have any restrictions regarding patients on probation or parole, however, you must get permission from your probation or parole officer first before pursuing a medical marijuana card.

What happens if I am stopped by law enforcement?

As a legal medical marijuana patient, you are protected. Patients do not have to disclose that they possess medical marijuana and do not have to consent to a search. However, if a search is conducted and medical marijuana is found, the patient should immediately present their patient ID card or direct law enforcement to the state database to show that they are a legal patient.

Do Ohio dispensaries recognize other state medical marijuana ID cards?

No. You must be certified in Ohio by a registered medical marijuana doctor to legally access and purchase from dispensaries in the state.

Can I use my Ohio medical marijuana card in another state?

Yes, there are multiple states currently accepting Ohio medical cards including Pennsylvania. The laws for using out-of-state medical cards vary from state to state, so the best way to find out is by contacting a dispensary in the state you’re interested in visiting to find out for sure.

Can I renew with Green Health Docs if I was seen by a different doctor last year?

Yes! You do not have to be seen by the same doctor each year. If you were certified by another medical marijuana doctor last year and would like to switch to Green Health Docs, we will be happy to take care of you!
