Benefits of Having a Medical Cannabis Card in Michigan
Even if you live in a recreational-use state, there are several advantages to becoming a medical marijuana patient.
Fewer Restrictions
Recreational cannabis is typically limited to patients over 21 years of age and comes with strict possession limits. As a medical marijuana patient, you face fewer restrictions and have more freedom to access your medication in greater quantities.
Greater Selection
A medical marijuana card affords you the privilege of shopping in both medicinal and adult-use dispensaries. Greater access means more products to choose from and more freedom to compare prices and find the best deals.
More Protection
Some recreational-use states still allow employers, landlords, and family courts to discriminate against cannabis users. A medical marijuana certification provides you with legal documentation demonstrating that your use is medically warranted. This can protect you against discriminatory or punitive actions in many states.
Better Prices
As a medical marijuana patient, you won’t be subject to the same sales or excise taxes required of recreational buyers. You may be able to save 10% or more on every purchase.

Can children become legal medical marijuana patients in Michigan?
Yes. Children (under the age of 18) can become medical marijuana patients in Michigan. However, the child must have a parent or guardian register as his/her caregiver.
What is a caregiver?
Caregivers provide a service for medical marijuana patients (including those under 18) who cannot or do not wish to go to a dispensary to purchase their medical marijuana. A caregiver is able to purchase medical marijuana on behalf of the patient as well as help administer the medication. Caregivers are only appointed by patients and must be 21 years or older and register with the state as a caregiver.
Will my insurance company cover the certification process, consultation, or medical marijuana application in Michigan?
No. Insurance companies do not cover any costs associated with medical marijuana due to conflicts with federal law.
How much medical marijuana can a qualifying patient possess at one time?
As a medical cardholder you may possess up to 2.5 ounces of medical cannabis on your person and up to 10 ounces at home.
What forms of marijuana will be available to purchase in Michigan?
Virtually all types of medical marijuana will be available at dispensaries in Michigan including raw flower, concentrates, edibles, tinctures, topicals, transdermal patches, and more. Seeds, clones, and other growing products will also be available.
Can I grow my own medical marijuana or can my caregiver grow it?
Yes. Adult patients 21 or older may cultivate up to twelve (12) marijuana plants in their home.
Will anyone be able to find out that I am a Michigan medical marijuana patient?
No, as a medical patient you are protected by HIPAA. Green Health Docs makes the privacy and security of our patients’ confidential information a top priority. No one will be able to find out your status as a medical marijuana patient unless you openly tell them or if you are administered a drug test for marijuana.
Can my employer still administer a drug screening for marijuana if I am a legal medical patient in Michigan?
Yes. With Michigan being an at-will state and there not currently being any legislation in place that protects medical marijuana patients in the workplace, medical cardholders can still be administered drug screenings and receive disciplinary action regarding the results of drug screenings. For this reason, we recommend making sure you are fully aware of your employer’s policy regarding drug screenings and medical marijuana before moving forward with the process.
Can I renew with Green Health Docs if I was seen by a different doctor last year?
Yes! You do not have to be seen by the same doctor each year. If you were certified by another medical marijuana doctor last year and would like to switch to Green Health Docs, we will be happy to take care of you!
